Feed the Mass You Hungry?

Community Freezer Program

A meal should be there when hunger is.

The You Hungry? Community Freezer Program places free, chef-prepared, ready-to-heat meals in trusted neighborhood locations—making it easier for people to find a complete meal where they already live, learn, work, worship, or receive services.

Easy access. No long lines. No judgment.

What Is the Program?

Free meals, placed closer to the people who need them.

Feed the Mass partners with schools, affordable housing communities, healthcare providers, nonprofits, churches, community centers, and local businesses to create a network of community freezers.

Each freezer is regularly stocked with frozen meals prepared in Feed the Mass’s commercial kitchen. Community members can choose a meal, take it home, and heat it when they are ready to eat.

The program provides flexible, dignified, low-barrier food access for children, families, students, seniors, people with limited transportation, people transitioning from homelessness, and households experiencing financial hardship.

$6 helps provide one complete, ready-to-heat meal.

Why Is This Important?

Food pantries remain essential. But groceries do not always become dinner.

Traditional food assistance is an important part of the hunger-relief system, but pantry access alone is not always dependable enough to meet the realities of modern life.

People may have difficulty getting to a pantry during limited distribution hours. Others may not have reliable transportation, safe food storage, a complete kitchen, additional ingredients, time to cook, or confidence preparing meals from scratch.

For a parent working late, a student coming home after school, a senior with limited mobility, or someone living in temporary housing, a bag of ingredients may not solve the immediate problem:

“What can I eat tonight?”

You Hungry? helps close that gap by providing meals that are:

  • Complete and ready to heat
  • Frozen for flexibility and reduced waste
  • Located inside trusted community spaces
  • Available closer to where people already are
  • Provided with dignity and fewer barriers

Hunger does not follow business hours. Access should not depend on having a full kitchen.

Ensuring Long-Term Sustainability Through Ongoing Support

A freezer creates access. Consistent support keeps it full.

Installing a freezer is only the beginning. A dependable program requires meals to be prepared, packaged, delivered, monitored, and restocked throughout the year.

Monthly and annual support helps cover:

  • Food and ingredients
  • Culinary staff and meal preparation
  • Packaging and food-safety materials
  • Transportation and scheduled delivery
  • Freezer monitoring and restocking
  • Host-site support and program coordination

Recurring support allows Feed the Mass to plan production, maintain delivery routes, respond to community demand, and assure host locations that meals will continue to arrive.

Sustainability means a family can return next month and trust that another meal will be there.

Yes. Meals are free to community members. Donations, sponsorships, grants, and community partners cover the cost of preparing, packaging, delivering, and restocking them.

Do people have to apply?

The program is designed for low-barrier access. Exact access procedures may vary by host location, but the goal is to avoid complicated applications and unnecessary barriers.

What does a host site provide?

Most host sites provide a secure and accessible location, reliable electricity, a designated contact, basic freezer monitoring, respectful community access, and communication when inventory is low.

Does a host need a commercial kitchen?

No. Feed the Mass prepares, packages, labels, freezes, and delivers the meals. The host site provides access to the stocked freezer under the partnership agreement.

Where can a freezer be placed?

Potential sites include schools, housing communities, libraries, clinics, community centers, nonprofits, faith communities, workforce programs, food pantries, local businesses, and culturally specific organizations throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington.

How often is the freezer restocked?

Meal quantity and delivery frequency are set through a written host-site agreement based on community need, storage capacity, funding, and delivery logistics.

Can we sponsor a specific neighborhood?

Yes. Sponsors may support a specific freezer, neighborhood, population, or regional expansion, subject to site availability and program capacity.
