FEED THE MASS TO LAUNCH COMMUNITY FREEZER PROGRAM TO COMBAT FOOD INSECURITY THROUGHOUT THE PORTLAND AREA

“You Hungry?” Campaign to Place Freezers at Trusted Partner Locations, Regularly Stocked with Free, Healthy, Frozen Meals for Individuals and Families

PORTLAND, OR – Sep 2, 2026 – Local food-focused nonprofit Feed the Mass today announced the launch of You Hungry?, a new initiative that places community freezers stocked with free, healthy, frozen meals at designated partner sites throughout the Portland area where residents already live, learn, work, and receive services, according to Feed the Mass founder Jacobsen Valentine.

“You Hungry? freezers will be located in places where individuals and families experiencing food insecurity can access meals when they need them without complicated applications, long lines, or unnecessary barriers,” Valentine said. “And they will be regularly stocked with food prepared by Feed the Mass’s commercial kitchen.”

The program functions as follows:

  1. Feed the Mass partners with a school, nonprofit, healthcare provider, community

center, faith organization, housing provider, or local business

  1. A branded freezer is placed at an accessible and approved location
  2. Feed the Mass prepares, packages, freezes, and delivers ready-to-heat meals
  3. The partner location helps provide safe and respectful access to the freezer
  4. Community members take the meals they need and heat them at home

The You Hungry? Program is designed to support children and families experiencing food insecurity; students who need meals after school or during school breaks; seniors and adults with limited access to transportation; people transitioning from homelessness; families experiencing an emergency or financial hardship; community members who need short-term food assistance; people who may not be able to cook a complete meal at home. Each meal is prepared in Feed the Mass’s commercial kitchen and designed to be convenient, filling, and easy to heat.

Feed the Mass is seeking partners to house the community freezers in safe, trusted locations such as:

  • Schools and after-school programs
  • Affordable housing communities
  • Community/recreation centers
  • Libraries
  • Churches and faith communities
  • Healthcare clinics
  • Social-service organizations
  • Colleges and workforce-training programs
  • Food pantries
  • Local businesses
  • Tribal and culturally specific organizations

“Our goal is to build a dependable network of community freezers that provides consistent access to nutritious meals throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington,” Valentine said. “When someone asks, ‘You hungry?’, we want to be able to say, ‘There is a meal available for you.’”

About Feed the Mass

A Portland based 501c3 nonprofit, Feed the Mass was established by Chef Jacobsen Valentine in response to a growing rise of food insecurity in Multnomah County and personal understanding of the challenges individuals and families face in accessing nutritious meals.

With a blend of Black and Hawaiian heritage, Valentine recognized the stark disparities in our city – food waste at an all-time high, growing economic inequality, and a struggling education system. He saw that the system was working against the community, and he was determined to be part of the solution.

In 2016, Feed the Mass started as an educational initiative, empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills to make healthier food choices. Today, Feed the Mass is driven by a clear mission to empower, educate, and serve. We’re guided by the belief that food is a universal language that can bridge gaps and enable individuals to thrive.
